about cricketer all-rounder ashwin

When Ravichandran Ashwin made his Ranji Trophy debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2006-07 season, he was a confused young man. Bowling was his calling, but he also opened in junior cricket.

He had scored 212 and an unbeaten 40 in an under-17 match (the Vijay Merchant Trophy) against Hyderabad.

But he couldn’t decide what his first-language should be: Finger-spin or batting? Self-effacing to boot, he hesitated to approach his seniors. For the record, Ashwin was dismissed for a duck in his first Ranji match and batted as low as number nine.

Tamil Nadu had a forgettable Ranji season in 2006. They were on the verge of relegation after Karnataka thrashed them by ten wickets. Tamil Nadu coach WV Raman was livid; he asked his boys how each of them would contribute to fashion a turnaround.

They were given time to reflect on it before their next game against Baroda.

A few days later, a typically diffident Ashwin told Raman: “Sir, I think I can bat.” Even this day, Raman can’t resist a smile when he recalls that episode. “Ashwin obviously felt he could bat slightly higher up the order. I didn’t think the timing of his suggestion was right. We had more serious issues to deal with,” Raman told DNA.

Ashwin wasn’t willing to give up. As he grew in stature in domestic cricket, he did his utmost to convince Raman that he had batting potential. Raman had a condition though. “I told Ashwin that he had to get five wickets and a hundred three times to convince me that he’s an all-rounder. If my memory serves me right, he did achieve that on two occasions,” Raman said.

Make it thrice if you include the five-for and 103 against the West Indies in the ongoing Test. “Now I’m expecting him to call me and remind that he’s fulfilled the criterion I’d set for him,” Raman said in jest.

Raman revealed he had a reason to dissuade Ashwin. “I always thought Ashwin could be a good bowling all-rounder. I wanted him to be faithful to his bowling first, for I’ve seen our bowlers focus too much on batting on the placid tracks in India. They’re deluded into believing that they’ve batting potential, which is not always true. In my view, Ashwin could be moulded into an all-rounder. He is a serious talent.”

Railways’ Sanjay Bangar, who had witnessed one of Ashwin’s Ranji hundreds, said, “I’m not surprised he’s got a hundred so early in his career, for he started off as a batsman in junior cricket. He has all the shots, though his strength is driving.”

Some of the attributes were there to be seen on Friday. He was exceptionally quick against spin and often used his wrists to glide the ball between gully and slip. There were some meaty straight drives early in his innings. In fact, he had a better strike-rate than Virat Kohli during their 97-run seventh wicket stand.

“On the one hand, I was trying to handle the pressure, on the other, he was scoring so freely,” Kohli said, adding, “he had bowled well and was carrying forward the confidence. He was pretty relaxed and was just reacting to the ball. It helped me take my time and get myself in.”

Only two Indian cricketers have grabbed five wickets and scored a century in the same Test. Vinoo Mankad in 1952 (184 and five for 196 at the Lord’s against England) and Polly Umrigar (172 not out and five for 107 against West Indies) at Port of Spain in 1962.

Ashwin has taken only three Tests to be in the august company

Desi Boyz Review

The movie review of Desi Boyz

Nonsense, besides sex, sells! And two beefy hunks, one in late thirties and the other in mid-forties, ripping their shirts off and showing off their finely waxed chests hardly make for an eye-pleasing sexual content. Not for the male lot this raunchy display of the ageing beefcake, I’m sure, sexual orientations notwithstanding. With sex scratched out, we are left with nonsense, something that director Rohit Dhawan, having inherited a good chunk of genes from his dad David Dhawan, can be veritably relied upon to be at home with.

And home with it Rohit Dhawan indeed is. For he manages a laugh out of situations like John Abraham and Anupam Kher rubbing against each other and looking into each other’s eyes, before the latter declares “Don’t get ambitious”. To Rohit’s credit he wrings out a few comic moments from the otherwise wooden John. Catch John absolutely nonplussed when his fiancé (Deepika Padukone) and her father (Kher) show up at his pad while he’s having a raunchy party with a bunch of eager-to-strip guys and girls.

Where Rohit Dhawan falters is in his bid to squeeze in melodrama where none was needed. The sequences involving Akshay Kumar and his orphaned nephew whose custody the latter is about to lose are aimed at leaving you moist eyed. They don’t. More embarrassing is a scene where a maths professor scoffs Indians as harebrained and Akshay spiels about the contribution of great Indians: from Aryabhatta, the contributor of ‘zero’, to Sabeer Bhatia the cofounder of hotmail. Worse still, Rohit filches an idea from an advertisement and turns it into a full-blown scene when Akshay makes a show of being beaten up by his interviewee to scare away the other contenders for the job. That’s lame! If anything was left, we have sanjay dutt who runs a male escort agency Desi Boyz and claims to be the purveyor of happiness to the womankind.

The story of Desi Boyz is pretty slim. Two best friends find themselves scrounging for a decent living in London after being hit by recession. Jobless but not hopeless, they must find something to make ends meet. Nick has a fiancé Radhika (Deepika Padukone) who craves for a perfect wedding while Jerry is trying to come good to gain the custody of the nephew he dotes on. Pushed to the wall, the two become male escorts, which involve stripping for women at bachelorette parties and even fulfilling their fantasies in the bed.

But this job turns their already derailed lives topsy-turvy. So the two Desi Boyz set out to make amends and get their lives back on track.

The movie’s pace is bumpy for the most part of the first half. The second half begins on a promising note with the introduction of Chitrangada Singhas the hot Economics professor who has a crush on her overaged student, Akshay Kumar. Chitrangada doubtlessly looks prettier and hotter than Deepika. There’s a scene where she offers to strip layer by layer for her student Akshay if he answers the economics questions correctly. The scene is almost exploitative, but Chitrangada makes it work. In comparison, Deepika’s character is reduced to looking sulky. Akshay Kumar and John Abraham are the two lifelines of Desi Boyz and they just about deliver the goods.

The film’s music by Pritam is below par. Cinematographer Natarajan Subhramaniam cans a few interesting shots, particularly one where Akshay and John are shown sitting on the ledge of their penthouse. In the dialogue department, Milap Zaveri comes up with some lines that leave you grinning.

All in all, Desi Boyz is a film that’s not a laugh riot but just about a tolerable one-time watch. Its humour may be irreverent, facetious and even crass, but it works at times.

`Kolaveri Di` is absolute nonsense, says Dhanush

Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: Tamil legendary actor Rajinikanth’s son-in-law Dhanush is certainly basking on the success of his chartbuster `Kolaveri Di` as it crosses over 8 mn mark on Facebook as one of the most shared songs on the social networking site.

However, Dhanush admits that the lyrics of the song has no meaning and is completely non-sense.

Talking to a daily, the elated national award winning actor said, “It feels nice when people are open with their praise for your work. I honestly didn`t think the song would be such a craze. This has made me realize that people universally want only simple lyrics and simpler tune from filmmakers.”

He believes that simple lyrics are what most people are looking for.

“My poor broken English lyrics, written in a silly tone, and borderline singing has proved to be advantageous for the success of this song.”

“I agree the lyrics is absolute nonsense and is written in Tanglish. That`s probably why people everywhere relate to it,” Dhanush added.

Dhanush is happy about the fact that his song is a roaring success across India and has been liked by stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and his father-in-law Rajini as well.

“It was nice of Amitabh Bachchan to listen to our song and congratulate us for it. My father-in-law, Rajinikanth, is equally thrilled, and he is proud his daughter Aishwaryaa has come out of his shadow to make a name for herself,” said the actor.

And for those who think other songs in the film `3` are similar to `Kolaveri Di`, Dhanush said, “The other songs in the film are both poetic and simple. I understand that at times, lyrics should make sense.”

how to propose a girl

As the popular notion goes, men are definitely from Mars (the passionate planet), so are the Women from Venus, the love planet. A nature's most wonderful creation, a girl loves unconditionally and her love is forever. She can love like there is no tomorrow and hate like you wish you would die. As solid and patient as earth, she can be a protector, a healer a creator and a destroyer. Proposing a girl can certainly be a bit tricky but not impossible. So guys if you are sailing in the confused boat unaware of the way to propose a girl, look out at the following tips to get ideas on how to propose her and be hers forever. We wish you all the best!

Proposing a Girl
  • Do a little homework. Get to know your girl well, before you pop the question. Get to know her interests, her dislikes, and her general nature that will help you plan your proposal in a better way. If she is shy and an introvert, propose when you two are alone. If she is sporty and loves adventure, then take her for rock climbing and propose when you reach at the top.
  • The age old way of going down on knees in public is still the best way to propose a girl. Don’t try this idea with a shy and introvert girl as she might find it difficult to reciprocate as it could be embarrassing.
  • Words matter a lot to girls if said genuinely or else they can easily figure out the topping of gloss you have added and will be unaffected. If you can write well, write a poem for her and record it in a CD. Play it while you are together and see her melting.
  • All girls love flowers. So get a huge bouquet of roses and tell her how much you love her and how much she means to you. Tell her you would like to spend the rest of your life with her or alone. Be ready to be smothered by a genuinely happy woman's hug!
  • Gestures have a great role to play in proposing a girl as they take a quick notice of it. Show your gentle, protective and emotional dependence nature while you are around her and mean it too. Girls fall for guys with these qualities and there will be no ground for rejection when you will propose her.
  • Appreciate her for what she is. Tell her "you look beautiful" when she does not have any make up on. Tell her she looks amazing when she is having a bad day and mean it. She will love you for it and will readily agree when you propose. Just don't overdo it, as it will look fake.
  • Girls love to be pampered so when you intend to propose, make sure you are chivalrous enough to make her feel special and at the same time not look vulnerable. Women want a strong man, not a wimp.
  • You can even propose the girl at a place where you first met or a place you have fond memories of as these places have an association attached to it that will give less chance to her for refusal.
  • Don't force her to say yes. The worst you can do is to push her around and threaten her dignity. Tell her to take her time and that you shall wait. Be a gentleman and respect her. Incase she doesn't want a relationship; she will let you know of it then and there.
